Marcellus retrieves the fallen screw for Tova

Remarkably Bright Creatures

Marcellus retrieves the fallen screw for Tova after she tumbles from a step stool while cleaning the rim of his tank. The act is modest but pivotal: as Tova worries over the damage and what she must tell Terry Bailey, Marcellus leaves his tank, locates the missing fastener, and returns it to her. The scene makes his attentiveness visible through a concrete exchange, while the next morning reveals that Tova’s fall has injured her more seriously than she first thought.

The Fall and Its Consequences

Tova is reaching across the tank to scrub a grimy section of its rim when the stool wobbles beneath her. Marcellus’s tentacles slip from her grasp as she falls onto the hard tile. She checks herself, finds that her left ankle can bear weight, and retrieves the rag that has landed beneath the tank. At first, she considers herself intact; the more immediate damage is to the stool.

The stool lies on its side by the tank pump, its upper rung hanging loose at one end. Tova tries to fit it back into place, but a small screw-like piece is missing. She searches the pale-blue-lit floor, first squinting and then putting on her glasses, without finding it. The broken stool leaves her with a practical problem and an ethical one: she is not supposed to climb on stools, especially in the pump room, and fears Terry Bailey may relieve her of her duties if he learns what happened. She briefly considers hiding or discarding the stool, then rejects the idea because she will not lie to him.

Marcellus Finds the Screw

As Tova tries again to repair the rung, she hears water shift behind her. Marcellus is already partway out of his tank. He flattens an arm and squeezes it through the narrow gap between the pump and the lid, then works his large mantle through after it. On the floor, he slides beneath a cabinet and disappears from view.

His departure briefly unsettles Tova: when he does not promptly reappear, she wonders whether he is escaping for good and feels the sting of the thought. But Marcellus returns a moment later. He looks directly at her, moves to her sneaker, and places a small silver object at its toe. It is the missing screw. Tova thanks him, but he is already slipping back into his tank. The sequence is brief and purposeful in its visible details: the creature leaves, finds the exact object she needs, brings it to her, and retreats.

A Small Act of Reciprocity

The retrieval answers Tova’s immediate problem without erasing the fall or its possible consequences. She had been occupied with caring for the tank and had been holding Marcellus when the stool gave way; now he supplies the part she needs to repair what broke. The screw’s arrival turns the scene from a solitary accident into an exchange. Marcellus does not merely escape the tank: he returns carrying something useful to Tova, and she acknowledges the gesture with thanks.

The morning after the fall qualifies Tova’s earlier relief. When she steps into her slippers, she crumples to the ground; only then does she see purple spreading across her left foot and recognize the ankle’s painful throbbing. The contrast between her belief that everything was intact and the visible bruising gives the episode a delayed consequence. Marcellus’s timely help remains a small kindness within a larger mishap, while Tova’s injury shows that getting back up did not mean she had escaped harm.
